Pianist Alessandro Taverna to Give Masterclass to Youngsters
An Italian virtuoso pianist will perform at York’s Barbican later this month after first giving a masterclass for young pianists.
Alessandro Taverna will star in the first concert of the York Guildhall Orchestra’s 34th season on Saturday, October 19.
But on the previous day, he will put some of York’s talented young pianists through their paces with a masterclass at York St John University’s chapel. The event, supported by the York Music Hub, takes place from 2.30pm to 5pm, with tickets costing £5 on the door.
An orchestra spokesman said that at the Barbican concert, Taverna would play the “fabulous, fizzing 3rd concerto” by Russian composer, Sergey Prokofiev.
“It will actually be an all-Russian concert – starting with two short pieces by Tchaikovsky demonstrating what wonderful tunes he could write – and the gloriously sumptuous Symphony No2 by Sergei Rachmaninov features in the second half.”
He said the orchestra was partnering with City of York Council for the second year running to provide wider opportunities for youngsters to come to concerts and experience the unique thrilling atmosphere of a full-sized symphony orchestra playing live.
“A number of tickets have been provided and York Arts Education are distributing them to young musicians at York Arts Academy and schools.”
Tickets are available from the Barbican box office on 0844 854 2757.
