Pianist David Helfgott To Shine On Australian Tour
David Helfgott, the inspirational pianist behind the academy award-winning movie Shine, will undertake his largest Australian tour in more than 20 years from August to November this year.
Performing 23 dates in both capital and regional cities, the extensive tour follows his acclaimed European tour and three sell-out performances in Sydney and Melbourne in 2012.
Producer Andrew McKinnon, who has presented the pianist on more than 50 occasions since 1986, says Helfgott’s popularity has waned little since he was catapulted onto the world stage following the release of Shine, and this extensive tour was testament to his ability to connect with new audiences, young and old.
“David’s recitals make a special impact on audiences,” McKinnon said.
“They are uplifted by his mastery of the romantic repertoire and inspired by his clearly evident love of the music.
“He connects with his audience in a unique manner and audiences leave the performance elated by what they have experienced.”
Long-time manager Jeff Weaver said at 66, an age where many concert musicians would be limiting their engagements, Helfgott had an enduring energy for performing and travelling.
“David’s playing goes from strength to strength and his energy for touring remains unabated,” Weaver said.
“In preparation (for this tour) he relaxes at home in the Central NSW coast hinterland, swimming daily and playing for hours and hours on his Petrof concert grand piano.”
The repertoire for his Australian shows is yet to be announced, but both new and old works are promised.
