8 Year Old Pianist Plays At Carnegie Hall
When Shaan Kumar played piano at Weill Hall in Carnegie Hall in New York last month, it was a rare achievement and honor for an 8-year-old.
Shaan, a 3rd grader in Triangle Elementary School in Hillsborough, earned a certificate and cash prize in the “Little Mozart” competition.
Shaan, a student of Julia Reina of the Reina School of Piano, in Somerville, got the opportunity after winning the first prize in The Little Mozart’s Crescendo International Music Competition. The young Indian American kid played Sonatina in C for piano at Crescendo International’s annual recital in New York on April 22, and was among the best in the junior class.
He scored 30 out of 30 in the judgment criteria, which included interpretation, technique, musical achievements, memorization and artistic maturity.
”Great musical feel — good steady rhythm, and you do a great job using the rhythm to pull us into the piece,” said a Crescendo competition judge, according to the Hillsborough Beacon. “It makes for very mature playing. Bravo!”
